How the gravel calculation works

Length × width × depth gives cubic feet. Divide by 27 for cubic yards, then multiply by tons per cubic yard. Density changes with material, grading, moisture and compaction, so the field is editable.

Worked example

A 20 ft × 10 ft area at 3 in deep is 50 ft³, or 1.85 yd³. At 1.4 tons/yd³, that is about 2.59 tons before compaction or waste.

Frequently asked questions

What depth should a gravel driveway use?

The required build-up depends on the subgrade, vehicle loads and specification. Calculate each layer separately.

Why does the supplier's tonnage differ?

Suppliers use product-specific bulk density and may sell by weight with minimum loads. Use their figure in the density field.

Does the result include waste?

No automatic waste is added. Apply the allowance required by the shape, compaction and site conditions.
